“Sugarcane leaf residues left in the field are a readily available resource for restoring soil health and strength.”

On May 29, the SAS team launched a pilot application of Soil Digest microorganisms in Sikhio District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, with two main objectives: to accelerate the decomposition of agricultural residues as an alternative to open burning (Crop Residues Management) and to restore soil health based on the principles of Regenerative Agriculture.

The trial was conducted on two field crops:

1. Sugarcane
Objective: To speed up the decomposition of sugarcane leaves remaining in the field so that they can be converted into organic matter and returned to the soil, thereby reducing the need for burning.

2. Cassava
Objective: To improve soil structure so that it becomes looser and more friable, allowing better water infiltration and air circulation, while also increasing soil nutrient fertility and improving the post-harvest yield percentage.

The ultimate goal of this trial is to provide a practical approach to reducing unnecessary chemical fertilizer use (Reducing Fertilizer Consumption). This approach can be implemented in real farming conditions and helps lower production costs for farmers. It also aligns with the current government policy of “precision agriculture, stable agriculture, and sustainable agriculture.”

SAS would like to express its sincere appreciation to all parties involved for their coordination and support, including officers from the Sikhio District Agricultural Office, the Plant Protection Division of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Agricultural Office, the agricultural drone team, and Khun Ae, the owner of the demonstration plot.

As for the results observed after the microbial application, further updates will be shared by the admin in due course.
