Soil Digest Supports Bang Nam Priao Farmers in Managing Rice Stubble and Straw as an Alternative to Burning

Bang Nam Priao District, Chachoengsao Province
Soil Digest microorganisms were tested for their effectiveness in decomposing rice stubble and straw on a 20-rai rice field owned by Mr. Paiboon Kaewsawang, a model farmer from Moo 7, Bueng Nam Rak Subdistrict.
The field test was conducted with officials from the Bang Nam Priao District Agricultural Extension Office, led by Ms. Phaknada Jongcharoen, Bang Nam Priao District Agricultural Officer.
The event was also honored by the participation of Mr. Thanakrit Lertchantrangkul, Agricultural Research Officer, Practitioner Level, from the Chachoengsao Rice Research Center, who joined the field observation.
Mr. Paiboon shared his experience:
“In the past, we used traditional methods by incorporating rice stubble and straw into the field and plowing it under. It could take several months for the straw to fully decompose. If the decomposition process continued for too long, the soil would begin to produce a rotten-egg smell from hydrogen sulfide gas. This is one of the major causes of stubble toxicity in rice, which can prevent the roots from effectively absorbing nutrients. One easy sign to notice is when the soil turns very dark or black.
If microorganisms can help accelerate the decomposition process, they could significantly shorten the time needed to prepare the field while recycling almost all of the nutrients contained in the rice stubble and straw back into the soil.
I also hope this can help reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, as fertilizer is one of the major costs in rice farming.
If the test results are as good as expected, I personally think this is very promising. The product is affordable and accessible to farmers, costing less than 40 baht per rai, and it is also easy to apply.”
SAS would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Bang Nam Priao District Agricultural Extension Office for coordinating and providing the demonstration field for this Soil Digest microorganism trial.
Soil Digest Microorganisms
